Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of negative word formation processes in Spanish and English. The methodology for the description is based upon the conception of word formation in the Lexical Grammar Model, which considers it as a phenomenon with two fundamental perspectives: (i) as a lexicological process of creation of a new lexical unit out of existing lexical material; that is, the derived word is the result of combining predicates, which can be free or bound morphemes; and (ii) as a grammatical process that involves the interplay of different types of conditions that range from the phonological level to the pragmatic one, via the syntactic and the morphological stages
